Cabinet Refacing vs. Replacement: Which Is Right for You?

April 18, 2026 5 min read Cedarline Team

When a kitchen starts to feel tired, cabinets are usually the first thing homeowners want to change. They take up the most visual real estate in the room. But the decision between refacing and full replacement isn't always obvious — and the wrong choice can mean spending significantly more than necessary or ending up disappointed with a result that didn't solve the actual problem.

Here's how to think through it clearly.

What Is Cabinet Refacing?

Cabinet refacing replaces everything you see — doors, drawer fronts, and the exposed face frames — while keeping the existing cabinet boxes in place. New veneer is applied to the box faces, new doors and drawer fronts are installed, and typically new hardware is added. When done well, a refaced kitchen is visually indistinguishable from brand-new cabinetry.

The process typically takes three to five days, creates minimal mess compared to a full demo, and costs roughly 40–60% less than full replacement.

What Is Full Cabinet Replacement?

Full replacement tears out everything — boxes, doors, and all — and installs completely new cabinetry. It's the more disruptive and expensive option, but it solves problems that refacing cannot: poor internal organization, damaged or deteriorating boxes, or a layout that simply doesn't work anymore.

Choose Refacing If...

  • Your cabinet boxes are structurally solid — doors and drawers open and close properly, and the boxes themselves aren't warped, water-damaged, or falling apart.
  • You're happy with the basic layout of your kitchen. Refacing keeps everything where it is.
  • You want a significant visual transformation without a major renovation budget.
  • You want the project completed quickly with minimal disruption to your household.
  • You're planning to sell in the next few years and want to refresh the kitchen without over-investing.

Choose Full Replacement If...

  • Your cabinet boxes are damaged — particleboard that's swollen from moisture, boxes that sag or bow, drawers that have structural failures rather than just worn slides.
  • You want to change the layout. Moving cabinets, adding an island, or reconfiguring the flow requires full replacement.
  • You need significantly more storage. Adding new boxes — for a pantry, a corner solution, or additional uppers — requires new cabinetry.
  • You want custom sizes or configurations that stock or semi-custom doors can't accommodate.

The test: Open your lower cabinets and press the interior bottom. If it feels soft, spongy, or crumbles at pressure, you have water damage and should replace. If everything feels solid and the boxes square up correctly, refacing is likely your best path.

A Word on Cost

In the Triangle, full cabinet replacement typically runs $15,000–$40,000 or more depending on the size of the kitchen, materials chosen, and whether you're going semi-custom or fully custom. Cabinet refacing for a comparable kitchen generally runs $8,000–$18,000. The gap is real and significant — especially if your boxes are in good shape and you simply need a new look.

"Cabinet refacing is one of the best value-per-dollar investments in kitchen improvement. When the boxes are sound, there's no reason to pay twice."

Don't Forget the Hardware

Whether you reface or replace, new hardware makes a dramatic difference. Pulls and knobs are the jewelry of the kitchen. Upgrading from dated brass knobs to modern matte black bar pulls, or brushed brass cup pulls, can change the entire feel of the space for a few hundred dollars. Always budget for hardware as part of your cabinet project — it completes the look.
